Meet Richard A. Miller, MD

Richard A. Miller, MD - Dr. Miller is a board certified Ophthalmologist and a Fellowship Trained Corneal Specialist. Dr. Miller received his medical degree from Northwestern University School of Medicine. He completed his ophthalmology residency training at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and then served his Fellowship in Corneal Transplant Surgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Dr. Miller is also the former Director of the Cataract and Corneal Transplant Division at the University of Chicago. He currently holds appointments as a former Director of Medical Education at Swedish American Hospital. Dr. Miller and his wife, Karen, have enjoyed life in the Rockford area since 1986. His hobbies include hockey, tennis, photography, horticulture and aviation.
 
 Dr. Miller’s practice specializes in surgery and treatment of complex eye diseases such as cataracts, refractive surgery to decrease dependence on glasses, corneal diseases and glaucoma, as well as solving ophthalmic complications from previous surgery.

Dr. Richard Miller was the first surgeon in the Rockford area to offer two revolutionary advancements in the treatment of cataract. The vast majority of patients who have undergone cataract surgery in the past received monofocal lenses, which typically requires the patient to wear eyeglasses for distance vision and bifocals for near vision following their surgery. The ReSTOR IOL is the first highly successful bifocal intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract patients. The goal of ReSTOR lens surgery is to restore your ability to read the newspaper, prescription bottles and mail, drive a car, or your other favorite activities, all without glasses. In clinical trials, 80% of patients reported not wearing glasses following bilateral cataract surgery with ReSTOR lens.

A second option to decrease your dependence on glasses is the Toric IOL that corrects pre-existing astigmatism. In clinical trials, 97% of patients reported not wearing glasses for distance vision.

As of mid 2011, Dr. Miller has implanted over 638 ReSTOR lenses and 295 Toric lenses; 90% of all Toric and ReSTOR implants done in the Rockford area.
